In February and March of 2014 80 Students from Los Angeles High Schools worked with artists from The Global Theatre Project to learn about the human rights issues and censorship violations in the European country of Belarus. Most of the students had never heard of the country, let alone the horrible situation which exists there for its citizens. The discussion allowed them to expand their knowledge of our neighbors, as well as to come to understand what the suppression of individual free expression can do to communities and societies. Through workshops the students have developed creative responses which were shared at the Belarusian Dream Theater event on March 25th.
Here are some photos from the workshops. One of which resulted in works of visual art that were based on the students individual expression of freely expressed desires, hopes and dreams. The pieces were displayed in exhibit for the public at the March 25th event as well as incorporated into the set of the production. The second workshop developed original performance pieces and video based on the imaginative development of character from photos of Belarusian citizens, some of which were shared at the event.
